- The Soviet Union was the first to send a probe to the Moon in 1959. It was to hit the moon but due to a programming error it missed the moon and the closest it came to the moon was 3,725 mi. It remains in orbit around the sun between Mars and the Earth.
- The Soviet Union was disbanded on December 12, 1991
- The Soviet Union was the first to impact the moon, Luna 2 hit the Moon on September 14, 1959.
